| I have an almost-10-year-old who's gotten into Chaotic, and of course he was really interested in getting involved on this web site. Having poked around a bit, I was really happy to see the amount of parental control allowed here (at least according to the *** and privacy policy and so forth). After allowing him to sign up, and getting the parental confirmation email to confirm that I approved, things started to get confusing.
The parental control email gives you your child's username and password. It does not give you a password for the parent to be able to log in and set their controls though. If you log in on the site with the child's username and password, there's a link on the site for parental controls! And if you go into it, you can actually see all of it. Of course, you can't add anyone, it's smart enough for that at least. Eventually by trial and error I discovered that I needed to sign up for my own account first, and then I could use the parental controls from my account and add my kid from there. But nowhere in the parental consent email did it tell me this, and I only figured it out because I made a good guess that that must be how it worked.
Some suggestions to ease the pain on other folks:
1) The parental consent email should inform you that you need to register for your own account that you can use to add your kid(s) to, and/or automatically create an account for the parent and give them a random password for it.
2) The parental control links on the website shouldn't even show up on the menu if you're logged in with an account that has a birth date on its profile young enough to be subject to parental controls. Having it there was just confusing, as my initial impression was you had a major security hole and the kid could get into his own parental controls. (which wasn't the case, it just looked like it)
Otherwise I've been pretty impressed with the site.
Just looking at the file list in the Chaotic Pad installer (yeah, I'm one of those paranoid computer security types), I can tell that the developers here have a clue by the choice of libraries included for video and audio. |

| | Thats a great idea. I have seen many players confused by the controls. |

| | yeah awesome ideas, not that it's really rellevant but there are a few people who fake their personal information for over protective reasons, so if some sneaky kid were to figure all this out and fake the age, they would have access to their own parental controls. (the pointless part of this post is that no kid would have a reason to change his age unless he/she was like 14 and have really over protective parents.) |

| | While I'm not a parent and haven't had to deal with those aspects of the site lol, I can say that those are some great ideas. There are actually quite a few parents using these controls so they can confidently let their kids play without dealing with contents that might be unsuitable for their age. I'm glad that you bring up ways to improve these features because it is a really neat concept that Chaotic has that will allow for a larger, safer community. |
