| Hello Chaotic Community!
I thought I’d take a moment to post in greater detail about the Auto-Challenge feature, for those of you who enjoy reading about that sort of thing. That’s all of you, right? Yeah…that’s what I thought! So here we go!
The Auto-Challenge feature consists of 20 buckets representing different ELO ranges on a bell curve.
-Whoa! Wait just one minute! Buckets? ELO? Bell curve? What’s all this?!
I’m so glad you asked! A bucket is like a room where a player waits to be placed in a match.
-Ok, so why not just call it a room?
Ummm…I have no idea. Let’s just call it a bucket. It makes the devs happy.
Anyway, for our purposes, we are using the bell curve method as a way of assigning players to the buckets in the Auto-Challenge. The way the buckets work is each of the 20 buckets can hold 1 player, with the middle bucket having a 50 point range of ELO scores from 1475 to 1525, and the first and last buckets having a 550 point range. This is because there are more players around the 1500 range (in the middle) than there are around 0 (lowest ranked players) or 4000 (highest ranked players.)
Got that? Great! Because we’re moving on to our next stop, ELO! We’re learning sooo much today!
ELO is a ladder rating system used in many games and it’s what we use as our ranking system for Chaotic. Each player starts out with an ELO rating of 1500 and then they gain or lose points based on whether they win or lose their matches. Winning against a player with a higher ELO rating than you will earn you more points, while winning against a player with a lower ELO rating than you will earn you fewer points. On the other hand, if you lose to a player with a higher rating, you'll lose fewer points than you would if you lost to someone with a lower rating. So basically, your rank will go up more if you win against someone with a higher ranking than you and it will go down more if you lose to someone with a lower ranking than you. What this means is that players at the top of the ELO ladder will have to work harder and play more games to gain points than a brand new player would.
-Wasn’t this post supposed to be about Auto-Challenge?
Absolutely! Ok, back to Auto-Challenge. Exciting stuff so far, huh?
There are two ways a match can occur through Auto-Challenge. The first way is when two players are in the same ELO range and are matched immediately. When this occurs, what’s happening is that a player is already waiting in a bucket and another player within their ELO range enters Auto-Challenge and is placed in their bucket for a match. The second way is if two players are in neighboring buckets waiting to be matched with someone in their ELO range. After a certain amount of time has passed without either player being matched with someone in their ELO range, the timer will cause these two neighbors to be matched with each other.
So, the best way to get a match is to enter the Auto-Challenge and stay in there because the timer will match players in neighboring buckets after a certain amount of time and the longer a player is waiting in the Auto-Challenge, the more likely they are to be matched up with another player. Be advised that if you toggle in and out of the Auto-Challenge by repeatedly pressing the Auto-Challenge button, what you are basically doing is adding and removing yourself from the bucket in your ELO range and resetting your timer, which means you will keep putting yourself at the end of the line and have to start waiting from the beginning again to get matched up with an opponent. This greatly reduces your chances of getting matched quickly. You probably don't want that, right?
Whew! That’s pretty much Auto-Challenge in a nutshell (or not…lol.)
We hope you’ve enjoyed this explanation about Auto-Challenge and thank you again for being a part of our Chaotic Beta Community!
